Sr. Ellen Muldoon, Sisters of St. Columban, expanded the ministry to the sick.

The Chinese Catholic pastoral ministry and a Sunday Mass in Mandarin were begun in 1981 at St Stephen Martyr Church. This ministry was later formally transferred to nearby St.Thomas Aquinas Church in Monterey Park at the request of the Archdiocese.
